To use your account, you must sign up with a credit card (or your Paypal). I used to use eBay to buy doujinshi and sell my comics. I haven’t made a purchase with them in over a year. When I moved, I forgot to close the account. I will own that.
I learned that if someone hacks your account and uses your payment info to buy shit on an eBay site in another country, it’s up to you to report it to eBay because they have no idea what’s going on, ever. I have purchase alerts on my card. My card was used to make purchases while I was watching the Walking Dead on Sunday. I called eBay. As they ran me through this ridiculous gamut of security questions, my account was still purchasing things in the UK. I pulled the card (while on the phone with eBay). Two purchases got through. Now it stands to reason that if my card has a user attached to an address in the states, and the alleged buyer contacts you about “sending their items to the UK” this should set off a red flag. Yes?
I contacted the first seller and informed them I didn’t make the purchase, on the phone with eBay to fix it. The second purchase occurred with a “power seller that cannot be contacted by buyers” AKA “an eBay-owned business set up to make you think they’re some retailer selling stuff.” When the eBay tech began reviewing my account, he saw the “power seller” purchase only (of course) and flagged the transaction. When I brought up the other item, I learned that I had to contact that vendor (a real person selling something), as it was my responsibility to contact them and tell them what’s happening. So much much for seller-protections.
The fuckfest gets better.
The person I contacted over the phone at eBay made it clear to me that all the fraud done within the confines of their site is MY PROBLEM. It is up to me to call the seller, change my passwords on EVERYTHING, and go to my bank to fix my mess because it’s my mess, not theirs.
Never using eBay again.
Wanting to connect socially (internet or IRL) with someone, anyone, because doing so will allow me a moment away from editing this series.
Am turning off the computer, and going out.
